Reimagining The Giving Tree featuring ‘The Giving Tree Continued’ by Jamie Roach

Join us on Tree Speech as we explore the enduring impact of Shel Silverstein's classic children's book, "The Giving Tree," 60 years after its publication. With Thanksgiving around the corner, we reflect on gratitude and re-evaluating traditions, drawing inspiration from Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer. Her insights on reciprocity with nature, as well as the gifts of gratitude, storytelling, and innovation, provide a thoughtful lens through which we can view our connections with the earth.

We also introduce an innovative audio narrative play by Jamie Roach, that extends "The Giving Tree," presenting a modern dialogue between the boy, now an old man, and the tree. This new perspective invites listeners to consider themes of environmental impact and human connection to nature.

In this poetic episode, we reflect on the themes of memory, friendship, and the cycle of life. Listen in as we explore the emotional bond between a person and a tree, enriched by childhood carvings and promises made under its branches. We journey through nostalgia and renewal, symbolized by a tiny sprout that signifies hope and continuity. Embrace a sense of belonging and interconnectedness with nature as we confront fear with comfort, illustrating a journey toward acceptance and transformation. Let this conversation inspire you to ponder your own relationship with nature and the gifts we exchange with the earth.

The actors include Laurine Towlerand Richard Brundage with Jamie Roach as Narrator. Music, Sound Design and Editing by Jonathan Zautner.
